Survey shows changes in the way women drive

Added: (Fri Sep 08 2006)

The National Travel Survey showed an increase in women drivers, indicating that more women are taking to the roads.

According to the research, there have been several changes in the way women drive between 1995–7 and 2005.

The number of women holding UK driving licenses has increased to 63 per cent from the previous figure of 53 per cent, with a greater number of older women taking to the roads as the number of women aged between 60-69 rose by a third to 61 per cent.

Women also made more trips than men in 2005. However, it has been previously proven that women make shorter trips, which could contribute to women being involved in less accidents then men and as a result getting cheaper car insurance.

The number of women drivers over 70 has also increased, and is expected to continue as younger drivers hold on to their license as they get older.

Women are proven to be safer drivers than their male counterparts, resulting in some car insurance providers being able to offer cheaper car insurance for women.

Over the last 12 months, the cost of premiums for car insurance for women has dropped by an average of 8.2 per cent.
