Female racing drivers reflect on the inspirational women drivers

Added: (Fri Sep 08 2006)

While women on the racing circuit are relatively rare, women drivers such as Danica Patrick are singled out for their popularity, if not their performance.

Popular drivers are bringing high exposure to their racing, with IndyCar leading the way, but as yet NASCAR has not found a leading lady, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Drag car racing appears to get a little more exposure, with its top five drivers all drawing inspiration from the pioneer of women's racing, Shirley Muldowney, who began racing with the boys in the 60's and was successfully licensed to compete in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).

Melanie Troxel driver in the NHRA Drag car series and daughter of Drag Car champion Mike Toxel, told Yahoo Sports: "I don't think that there's been the right opportunity for a woman to succeed in NASCAR like we've had here in drag racing.

"Shirley opened doors decades ago and all women have been able to benefit from that. NASCAR hasn't had their Shirley Muldowney yet."

With the spotlight turning to women in racing, it may finally prove that women are every bit as talented behind the wheel as men. As safer drivers, women can expect to get cheaper deals on car insurance.
