PRESS RELEASE:
For IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 7, 2006.

As students file back into class, Easson Publishing launches a new book to help make history interesting and relevant for kids. Author, Rebecca Herzberg of Kitchener, ON, Canada, writes Juvenile Historical Fiction, and her latest book, Colonies in Conflict in 1837, is designed to make history interesting, informative and relevant for students.

Colonies in Conflict in 1837, is a juvenile historical fiction story that transports readers back to the Colonies of Upper and Lower Canada and their Rebellions of 1837. This story is intended for junior students who, according to the Ontario curriculum, are slotted to study the 1837 rebellions in grade 7. Herzberg states, “ These rebellions seem fruitless and unimportant at first glance but Colonies in Conflict in 1837, is designed to help students understand that the rebellions cumulated French English relations; relations that are still relevant today.

Making history relevant is one of Herzberg’s primary goals with her juvenile historical fiction collection. She uses the time travel concept in her writing so that readers can easily identify with modern characters as they explore history. “Seeing history through a modern perspective helps students draw the connection of History and modern times. After all, the importance of history is to draw from the past, learn from mistakes and use what we have learned to pave the way for tomorrow,” says Herzberg.

Colonies in Conflict in 1837, is Herzberg’s latest time travel story. Initial book, Follow the River North, (2003) started the adventure of main characters Luke and Laura as they were transported through time to witness Canadian involvement in the American Civil War. “We are living in a global society,” Herzberg states, “When students’ understand the history between countries it gives them the foundation for understanding current global issues and relations.”

Herzberg has had a lifetime of looking at things with a global perspective. A duel citizen to England, a former member of the Canadian Armed forces, and a graduate from the Social Sciences Department from the University of Guelph, Herzberg has had a wealth of experience to draw from. Herzberg continually looks for ways to engage people in the learning process. For the past 10 years she has been a member of a Canadian Charity called the American Civil War Historical Reenactment Society, a group dedicated to educating people about History through the production of Time Period Reenactments. Herzberg also founded the “GET INTO BOOKS” program that works with teachers and students by encouraging them to participate in the writing process by producing their own books.
