How to Choose an Efficient Air-Conditioner

Added: (Sat Sep 20 2008)

When choosing an air-conditioner, the most efficient one will be the one that does the best job - i.e. cooling or heating - for the least cost and noise. Split systems are the quietest, although they cost more to buy initially than the window/wall system. Split systems are the best for renters because they are easy to take with you should you move.

Air-conditioners all have star ratings to show their efficiency, along with a similar-coloured box to show their energy consumption rating. The reverse-cycle models have two bands of stars: blue for cooling and red for heating. They also have two boxes in blue and red for the power consumption.

Models that only cool will have one band of stars and one box, both coloured blue. There are air-conditioners that only heat, but these are rare in Australia. They will have their stars and box only in red. Some of the newer air-conditioners have an inverter or variable speed drive that makes them more efficient than other models when operating at part-load. So even though their star rating would appear to be less efficient than other models, that is only at full-load. In Australia, most air-conditioners are run at part load, so they are popular here.
