Moving on up ...and up...old bangers cross the Alps

Added: (Tue Jul 03 2007)

September 14th 2007 sees the Essex Boys, Colin Heather and Steve Purcell, joining the Scally Rally to hurtle down through Europe, wind up and down Alpine passes and over the Dolomite mountains to lakeside Rimini, Italy. And their vehicle for this trip? A Lambo? Ferrari? No, a typically Essex 23 year old Ford Capri.

The Scally Rally is a European banger Rally and driving challenge with a twist. It takes in some of the most demanding mountain passes in Europe but the cars must only have cost 100 or less to buy. This year there are 100 cars embarking on the trip and the rally is raising money for the Alzheimers Society.

Adrian Flux Insurance has covered all the motoring insurance costs for the trip for the Essex Boys including a comprehensive recovery clause that Colin hopes they wont need for their ultimate 1984 Essex boy car.

Gerry Bucke at Flux has been really helpful, says Colin. Not only has he given us superb insurance cover thats saved us about 250 but hes also donated hundreds of pounds worth of raffle prizes for our various fund-raising evenings in Steves South East London pubs.

Both Steve and Colin have Essex links. Colin has Cakeworld shops in the Lakeside Shopping Centre and Elm Park, Hornchurch. And Steve lives in Essex although his Adam and Eve pub is in Rotherhithe and The Rising Sun is off the New Kent Road.

The Ford Capri has taken a bit of work to get road worthy including some welding, new seats, a five speed gearbox, new tyres and of course a new sound system. The body work has had a bit of a re-spray and sponsors logos are being added. Theres still a bit of space left.

It looks fantastic now, says Colin. But negotiating those hairpin bends without power steering should be interesting. Weve started doing muscle building exercises already!

They hope to get the car home at the end of the rally and then have a giant raffle to sell off parts or the whole thing depending on what state its in. Altogether Colin and Steve are hoping to raise at least 3000 for Downs South, a London-based Downs Syndrome charity.
