Betting Update; Angus Best Bets Royal Ascot Thursday

Added: (Wed Jun 20 2007)

The BBC's Angus Loughran casts his expert eye over the top class action on Ladies Day at Royal Ascot where the meetings feature, The Gold Cup, is run.

14:30 (Norfolk Stakes) Spirit of Sharjah 2pts e/w
A rare Royal Ascot runner for trainer Julia Feilden and in Spirit of Sharjah she has a real chance of making it a day to remember. Her entry has won his first two starts in impressive fashion at Newmarket and then more recently Goodwood and looks to have bags of speed to cope with the challengers from the bigger stables.

15:45 (The Ascot Gold Cup) Yeats 4pts win
Returning Gold Cup winners have a great record of following up in recent years with Royal Rebel and Kayf Tara doing just that, and with this years contest not looking as strong as twelve months ago it will take a big performance to stop the prize going to the OBrien team and Yeats.
After coming seventh in the Melbourne Cup at the end of last year hes returned to winning ways this term with victories at Navan and Leopardstown over trips well short of todays. This confirms his well-being and by showing he can still mix it at a high level over these shorter trips indicates that if they switch him off again like last year his pace in the closing stages should provide him with a winning formula.
Probably the most popular flat horse in training Sergeant Cecil chased him home in fifth last year and if he can turn the tables you will probably not hear a bigger cheer at the entire meeting. But although hell be hard to keep out of the frame Yeats will probably have too much speed in the final furlongs to prevent the popular horse adding another win to his impressive record.

16:20 (The Britannia Stakes) Colorado Rapid (NAP) 3pts e/w
Another potential pin-job, but trainer Mark Johnston rarely leaves the Royal Meeting without a winner or two and with four entries here hes clearly targeted this race as one of them. Jockey bookings suggest of his runners Colorado Rapid and Players Please are the two to concentrate on with the former the one that interests me the most.
Still relatively unexposed this three-year-old is yet to finish out of the frame in four runs and unlike most of Johnstons runners who are hard to pass out in front I expect to see this one held up. He showed a blistering turn of foot last time out at Pontefract to go clear in the final furlong, and although this is much more competitive hes clearly got plenty of ability and should go very close indeed.
Of the rest John Gosden has picked up this race three times in recent years so his Ekhtiaar is probably also worth a second look.

16:55 (The Hampton Court Stakes) Al Shemali 2pts e/w
This can go to Sir Michael Stoutes runner Al Shemali. His latest third in the Dante was as we all know given a huge boost when the winner that day, Authorized, went on to land the Derby by five lengths. So judged on that form he rates a solid selection dropped to this grade.

17:30 (The King George V Stakes) Record Breaker 2pts e/w
Plenty to make a case for in the last but again with Mark Johnstons record here at the Royal Meeting and in particular this race (3 wins in last 5) its hard to see past his trio, Record Breaker, Eradicate and Swiss Act, with the first two named looking his main chances based on jockey bookings.
Both are interesting but Ill side with Record Breaker who is yet to taste defeat this term with wins and Musselburgh and Goodwood. Before that he ran here at Ascot last July, so has some valuable course experience and only having the three runs is bound to still have plenty of improvement still to come.
